Sardines Festival
Monday, July 27, 2009, 9.00 p.m., village green Longos.
A long time ago, when Longos was not yet the cosmopolitan village of
Achaia, the inhabitants earned their life with agriculture and fishing.
At that time the fishermen casted out their fishing nets almost every day
into the Corinthian Gulf, which was rich of fish then. Sometimes -
after a good catch - they set the table, sometimes with the famous
„Bourgeto“, the recipe was brought from Lefkada island by Christos
Foteinos - with the nickname „Poulakas“, sometimes with fish soup or
octopus, sometimes with grilled sardine and of course plenty of wine.
Times changed and many of the old traditions do not exist any longer.
To establish some of the traditions, Longos' Cultural Society "Lord Byron" carried out the Sardines Festival for the first time in 2008 (the 2007 Sardines Festival was cancelled due to solidarity with the victims of the forest fire) and so we did this year too. Grilled sardines were given to the inhabitants and friends of Longos, accompanied with wine and music ...
The „catch“ was a friendly donation of Mr. Pantelis Kaloudis from Patras.
