The cut of the New Year Cake took place on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 06:00 p.m. at the Cultural Centre Longos.

The priest of our parish, Dionisios Livanas, blessed the New Year cake.

The pie’s florin was found by Mr. Dimitris Kravaritis.

TRIBUTES

At this event, the Managing-Committee of our society presented once more the life and the legacy
of people who lived and passed by our village and helped the development, the peace and the
progress of this place to a big or to a smaller extent.

Since several yeras, the Managing-Committee of the Longos Cultural Society "Lord Byron"
organises a Ceremonial Laying of Wreath at the memorial of the victims of 22nd of August, 1962.

"AKROPOLIS" of 23/08/1962:

"Eine erschütternde Tragödie hat sich
gestern nachmittag außerhalb von Aegion
zugetragen, als 8000 Tonnen Erde aus ei-
ner Höhe von 60 Metern abrutschten
und eine Gruppe von Dorfbewohnern
unter sich begruben, die frei-
willig am Bau einer öffentlchen Straße arbeiteten. Fünf Dorfbewohner wurden ge-
tötet und fünf weitere verletzt.
Als die Fotografie, die den Ort des ge-
waltigen Erdrutsches zeigt, aufgenom-
men wurde, waren noch nicht alle Toten geborgen. Auch das abgebildete Fahr-
zeug ist vom Strom der Erdmassen erfasst und zerstört worden.
... Diese schreckliche Unglück ... ist unter
folgenden Umständen eingetreten: In dem
Küstendorf Longos bei Aegion, das im Sommer viele Touristen anzieht, wird seit drei Tagen durch Arbeits-
verpflichtung der Bewohnen und mit finazieller Unterstützung der Präfektur Achaia die einzige Zugangsstraße
zum Dorf gebaut. Eine Gruppe von Bewohnern Longos' arbeitete Gestern seit der Frühe in einem Steinbruch
in der Nähe der Brücke des Meganitos-Flusses, um den zum Bau der Straße benötigten Kies zu gewinnen, der
mit dem Kipp-Fahrzeug transportiert werden sollte. Die Gruppe bestand aus dem Gemeindesekretär der Gemein-
de Longos, Panagiotis A. Bouloubasis ..., aus Nikolaos Birbilis ..., Nikolaos A. Markouras ..., Christos D. Moukas ...,
Christos Tsaousis ..., Antonis T. Tsamtsouris ..., Dimitrios Alexakis ..., Panagiotis Chr. Sotiropoulos ..., Antonios G.
Stefos ... und Pavlos Z. Rogalas. Von den oben genannten fanden die ersten fünf einen tragischen Tod unter den
Erdmassen, während die anderen fünf verletzt wurden. Unter den wie durch ein Wunder geretteten befand sich
auch Panagiotis Sotiropoulos, der das Unglück wie folgt beschreibt: "Ich arbeitete im Steinbruch in einer Mulde
und über uns hing buchstäblich die Spitze des Hügels. ... Plötzlich und völlig überraschend sahen wir, wie die
Spitze des Hügels mit dämonischem Getöse herunterrollt. Bevor wir uns in Sicherheit bringen konnten, erreichten
uns riesige Geröll- und Erdmassen, die nahestehenden wurden unter Tonnen Erde begraben, diejenigen, die sich
etwas weiter entfernt befanden, empfingen weniger Steine und Erde. ..." Gegen 4 Uhr am Nachmittag haben die
Rettungskräfte zwei Leichen geborgen, die indentifiziert wurden als der Gemeindesekretär der Gemeinde Longos,
Panagiotis A. Bouloubasis und als der Fahrer Birbilis aus Psathopyrgos, die einen tragischen Tod fanden, gefan-
gen unter dem umgestürtzen Kipplaster und erschlagen von einer riesigen Erdmasse. Für die übrigen unglück-
lichen Dorfbewohner besteht keine Hoffnung auf Rettung ..."

 

 Panagiotis Bouloubasis

 Panagiotis Bouloubasis was born in Longos in 1907. His parents
 were Aristidis and Angeliki Bouloubasis.

 Panagiotis Bouloubais left 4 children, Angeliki, Eleni, Aristidis and
 Dimitrios.

 He was sekretary of the municipality of Longos and a very active
 member of our society.

 By board decision No. 5 of 1937 he becomes together with Aristos
 Golfinopoulos secretary of of the Longos Cultural Society and in July
 1949 when the board decided to perform the two drama "SAMUEL"
 and "THE CHILDREN OF GREECE", Panagiotis Bouloubasis was appointed
 to stage director.

 

 Christos Tsaousis

 Christos Tsaousis was born in Longos in 1910.

 His parents were Konstantinos and Anna Tsaousis.

 For a long time Christos Tsaousis was a cantor of
 the Church of saint Dimitrios in Longos

 

 

Nicolaos Birbilis

Nicolaos Birbilis was born in Psathopirgos near Patras in 1926 in Psathopirgos near Patras
as last of 10 brothers and sisters. His parents were Aristoteles
and Garifalia Birbilis.

After his army days at the air force, Nicolaos Birbilis became a
driver at Achaia prefecture and mariaged in 1961 Antonia
Latsinou; in July 1962 his daughter, which got later his name
Nicoletta, was born.

Sent by the prefecture at request of the municipality of Longos,
he was at August 22, 1962 as lorry-driver at the place of the
tragedy to help in building the street from the coast to the
national road Athens-Patras.

 Nikolaos Markouras

 Nikolaos Markouras was born in Longos in 1939.

 His parents were Andreas and Eftichia Markouras.

 Nikolaos Markouras war the youngest child of the family

 after Spyros and Elias.

 

 

Christos Moukas

Christos Moukas was born in Longos in 1946.

His parents were Dimitrios and Eleni Moukas.

Christos Moukas had an older brother named Arsenis.

 

The Managing-Committee of our society has invited relatives of the victims of ...

August 22, 1962. Each one of them was given an icon as a memory of this evening.
