Vyiyna . . .

Vytina (Greek: Βυτίνα) is a mountain village and a former municipality in Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece. It is considered a traditional settlement. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Gortynia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 139.309 km2.[3] The seat of the municipality was the village Vytina. The village is located at the foot of the mountain range Mainalo. The area produces marble, a variation called the Black of Vytina. Vytina is 10 km east of Levidi, 15 km northeast of Dimitsana and 24 km northwest of Tripoli. The Greek National Road 74 (Tripoli - Pyrgos) passes through Vytina. The ancient Arcadian city Methydrion was located near Vytina.

History

In ancient times, the goddess Demeter and Hippias Poseidon were worshipped here. The ruins of the temple are preserved at the entrance to the village of Magouliana.

In the Greek revolution of 1821, Vytina was recognised as Bacufio and considered a holy place. As a supply centre, the city played a crucial role in the war and was therefore burned down seven times by Ibrahim.

After liberation and until the Second World War, Vytina was the major commercial centre of the region with an important bazaar. There was even a branch of the Bank of Athens and a forestry school. The most important reason for the development at that time was the lack of traffic with the surrounding villages, so that Vytina was no longer the former commercial centre when it was completed. Today, an important attraction for Vytina is the ski resort of Ostrakina in Mainalo. Worth a visit is Argyrokastro (1450 m altitude) near Magouliana, which lies on the edge of a 100 m cliff and was built by the Franks in 1205 when they founded the barony of Akova.

Places of interest

The main sights in Vytina are the Church of St. Tryphon, which dominates the town square and was built in 1846 of black marble from the surrounding area, the two traditional bakeries with wood-burning ovens near the central square and the Folklore Museum, while the remarkable library with documents and books from the 17th century is worth a visit. The Vytina Primary School, donated by Andreas Syngrou, is also worth seeing. What gives the town its special beauty is the tree-lined "Street of Love", which starts almost at the square and ends at the national road from Tripoli to Vytina. The street has borne this name for a long time, when it was a place for strolling and getting to know each other for the youth of that time. The main products are honey from coniferous trees and cattle, meat, cheese, etc.

From Vytina you can visit Dimitsana, the Lucius Gorge, Stemnitsa and Lagadia in a relatively short time, while a good asphalt road climbs the slopes of Mainalo and reaches the plateau of Ostrakina at 1600 m, where a small ski resort operates.
