HistoryAccording to tradition, Elati was settled a few years after the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire. The current location of the village is relatively new. Before 1943, the village was located further west near the river. In 1943, the village was burnt down by the German army during the German occupation of Greece. Along the road from Trikala to Elati stands the church of Porta Panagia, which was built in the village of Pyli in 1283. The arched bridge over the river Portaikos was built in 1514 by St Bessarion II of Larissa. There are many monasteries in the area. Among the monasteries still in operation are the monastery of Gouras and the monastery of Agiou Vissarionos, both located near Pyli. The other monasteries are abandoned. They are located near the villages of Neraidochori, Pyrra, Desi and Gardiki. Visitors to Elati can enjoy numerous sports and other activities. In winter, a small ski centre operates 7 km outside the village on the way to Pertouli. There is also an endurance ski centre. In spring and summer, there are many hiking trails through the forest with springs and meadows as well as long forest paths that can be travelled by car, motorbike, mountain bike or even on horseback. Just a quarter of an hour from the village, on Kokkinos Braxos, there are three via ferratas. Below the highest peak, Koziaka, is the Xatzipetros hut, which can accommodate 20 people.
