OLYMPIA - Museum of the Olympic Games ...

The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games houses artefacts that illustrate the history of the Olympic Games in antiquity. The museum is under the supervision of the Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities.

The exhibits

Its exhibitions are housed in the so-called ‘Old Museum’ or ‘Syngreion’, which formerly served as the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The restoration and refurbishment of the building began in 1999 on the occasion of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and was completed in 2003. The exhibition on the history of the ancient Olympic Games was then set up.

Until 2012, it housed 463 ancient artefacts from the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia and other museums in Greece. On February 17, 2012, the museum was robbed in an armed attack, as a result of which 77 of the 463 ancient exhibits were removed. The then Minister of Culture, Pavlos Geroulanos, submitted his resignation, which was not accepted.
