Tthe Lion of Bavaria ...

Between the church of Agion Panton and the town's current cemetery is the Lion of Bavaria on Michael Iatrou Street. The Lion a monument of exceptional art sculptures and one of the most important of the 19th century in Greece from 1840-1841 .

The monumentally sized lion carved into the rock is depicted sleeping. The sculptor of this beautiful monument is the German Christian Ziegel, who was the first professor of sculpture at the Technical University of Athens. The model for Siegel's work was the Lucerne Lion by the famous Danish sculptor Bertel Torvaldsen.

Below the Bavarian Lion, a German inscription is engraved on the rock, indicating that the monument was ordered by the Bavarian King Ludwig, the father of the first Greek King Otto, in memory of the Bavarian soldiers who belonged to Otto and had died of a typhus epidemic in Nafplio in 1833 and 1834. Today, the area in front of the Bavarian Lion has been turned into a small park with benches and is ideal for a short break to explore this part of the city.
