The Church of Panaghia . . .The church near Plateia Syntagmatos dates back to the 15th century. In front of this church there is a monument to the martyr Anastasios of Nafplio, who was tortured by the Turks. Saint Anastasios was a native of Nafplio and practised the profession of a painter. The Turks tried to convert him to their faith with various promises, but Anastasios remained unbendingly faithful to his Christian faith. Finally, on 1 February 1655, he suffered martyrdom, being dismembered by the Turks. To this day, he is commemorated every year on the anniversary of his death, and he has also been elevated to the patron saint of the city.
