MUSEUM OF POPULAR ARTS AND TRADITIONS . . .

The "V. Papantoniou" Museum is housed in a renovated and appropriately converted neoclassical building from the early 20th century and is located at 1 V. Alexandrou Street on the corner of Sofroni Street in Nafplio.

The Foundation's collections were established in 1974 with the first donation of 6,000 objects by Ioanna Papantoniou, and now include about 50,000 objects directly related to modern culture. Most of the objects date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but there are also some older objects, such as the "cutlery", with "tokens" and "clavis" from Egyptian tunics dating back to the 6th century. The costume collection, the collection of toys from all over the world, jewellery, paintings, drawings and prints, but also the collection of fashionable clothing and its accessories are worth highlighting. The entire fashion collection of Yannis Tseklenis, the doll collection with local costumes of Fanis Kazes, the archive of Yannis Metsis and the historical archive of Takis Mavros were donated to the Foundation.

In order to better manage the collections, the electronic catalogue of the museum collections "ARISTIDES" was created, which was designed from the beginning based on the Foundation's know-how and taking into account the basic international standards for the documentation of ethnographic objects.

The first exhibition in 1974 was on the rural and urban costumes of the Peloponnese. In 1981, the ground floor was converted to house the exhibition on natural textiles in Greece: their production, processing and use in local clothing and in the home, with references to techniques, trades, etc., covering the period from 1835 to 1945. The sections of the exhibition dealt with cotton, flax, hemp, sparto, silk, wool, trawling, spinning and dyeing of yarns, textile strips, loom making and the various types of weaving, water weaving and mending, dyeing, sewing, marrying and dowry, embroidery, aprons, knitting, lace and polka dots. In 1986, the first floor was rebuilt to provide exhibition rooms, a sales room and adjoining rooms for the "Greek Traditional Costumes" exhibition, as they have been produced in Greece over the last 150 years. On 11 August 1999, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, the exhibition "The Best of the PPLI" was shown on the first and second floors of the Folklore Museum in connection with the millennium, in order to present the range and diversity of the museum's collections, which at that time comprised 25,000 objects from 22 different categories. Since 2006, the exhibition "Hellenic Asty: Nafplion 1822-1922" has been on display in the already remodelled interior building. The new permanent exhibition "Collections: a Journey through Space and Time" is dedicated to the Foundation's collections. In a free and daring installation, the journey from the 19th to the 21st century is traced. Selected objects in thematic sections take us on a journey through the natural and social environment of Greek historical space and time. On the ground floor there is a museum shop where the Foundation's publications (books, records, posters, postcards) and gifts are available.
